Introduction

An iconic timepiece requiring little introduction, the Cartier Tank is perhaps the most recognizable piece of horological design, thanks to its rectangular case, beautifully symmetrical dial, and overall aesthetic beauty. Building upon that design heritage, the Tank saw the introduction of a new Tank Louis model in 1974 called the "Jumbo," which saw the collection expand into a larger 28 x 34 mm case design and the automatic movement, the cal. 170 to be specific. While designated by its more significant design, the Jumbo's most telling attribute is perhaps its bubble-back, used to house its larger and more convenient movement. Unnoticeable on the wrist, this bubble reminds the wearer of the horological importance the Jumbo played in the Tank Louis history as its only automatic model still to this day. An authentic piece of watchmaking history, the Tank Louis Jumbo combines horological importance with classical design in perhaps the most appealing way possible.

The Size

THE SIZE

At 28 x 35mm, this watch is significantly larger than the typical Cartier Tank you might be accustomed to seeing. Manufactured in the Parisian workshops of Cartier, this particular model was only produced for a short period of time in the 1970s.

THE MOVEMENT
THE MOVEMENT

The employment of an automatic movement and its rotor necessitated the redesigning of the back to a bubble-like protrusion. This allowed for the watch to maintain its slim profile, and when on the wrist, the added thickness is unnoticeable.

Condition

The overall condition of the watch is very good. Dial is in excellent shape with little to no signs of aging. The crystal has a few light scratches. Case is in very good conditon, and although the caseback numbers are worn, they are fully visible. The watch is on a custom leather strap with its original 18k WG deployant buckle.

Our Perspective

We love the generous proportions of this 1970s design, a real departure from the usual Cartier tank dimensions. It truly lives up to its "Jumbo" moniker. Already difficult to find in yellow gold, this white gold example is an absolute rarity.
